ar ·chi·tec·ture  [ahr-ki-tek-cher]: the art or science of building; specifically: the art or practice of designing and building structures and especially habitable ones.

Take a moment to look around you. Does your built environment add anything to what you do or how you do it?  Is the environment around you interesting or inspiring? Are you better off because of it or do you even notice it?

7 Steps to Building Potential®
How to Maximize Value in your Next Project

Step 4: Architecture and Design

Rule of Thumb: Create innovative solutions.

Innovative design blends imagination, functionality and common sense.

The architectural design phase plays an essential role in translating your project vision into its “final physical form”. When you think about architecture, the focus is often on the functionality it provides – or the aesthetic beauty of the design. While these are essential elements of good architecture, the role of architecture in our daily lives goes beyond these basic ideas.

Ultimately, architecture should reflect an understanding of the “connection” between people and their surroundings – it' s about creating an experience that not only works on a functional or aesthetic level, but on a human level as well.

Through creativity and innovation, effective architectural design reflects your organization' s identity, incorporates your business objectives, and balances your various organizational needs. Good design always creates new value that can be measured using a variety of metrics, including higher space utilization rates, lower capital costs, lower maintenance and life-cycle costs, or better energy efficiency.

A well-designed building with efficient space utilization can facilitate a new level of productivity and effectiveness, providing potentially huge savings, and establishing a better platform for your organization's future growth and evolution.

Project Spotlight

Austin Police Substation and Forensics Science Center — Austin, Texas

When voters in Austin, Texas approved bonds to construct a new Police Substation and Forensics Center, TAG International was selected to provide the architectural design and oversee the implementation of the project.

Working closely with the City of Austin and the Austin Police Department, TAG was successful in overcoming many complexities to achieve a spectrum of project goals and deliver the facility on schedule and within budget. The new highly specialized, state-of-the-art facility enhances the Police Department's ability to solve crimes, meets the diverse needs of APD' s staff and daily visitors, and strikes an effective balance between accessibility and security.

Ultimately, the APD building functions as it was intended to — both on a functional and a human level. It allows people who do very important jobs to work in an environment that is not just state-of-the-art, but also an inviting, inspiring place to work.
